How PDF compression works
This tool re-encodes images embedded in your PDF using JPEG compression. Text, fonts and vector graphics are copied unchanged, so they stay sharp. Image-heavy PDFs see the biggest savings, while text-only documents compress less. The quality preset controls how much image detail is kept: lower quality means smaller files.
Frequently asked questions
Are my PDF files uploaded anywhere?
No. Compression happens entirely in your browser using JavaScript. The files never leave your device, which makes it safe for confidential contracts, invoices and other sensitive documents.
Which quality setting should I choose?
Strong compression is best for documents where file size matters more than image quality, like email attachments or web uploads. Balanced works well for most documents. Light compression keeps higher image quality while still reducing file size.
Why did my PDF barely get smaller?
PDFs that contain mostly text or vector graphics compress very little, because those elements are already efficient. Image-heavy PDFs (like scanned documents or photo albums) see the biggest file size reductions. Already-optimized PDFs may not shrink much further.
Will compression affect text quality?
No. Text and vector graphics stay sharp. Only embedded images are compressed, and the quality slider controls how much detail is kept.
Is there a file size limit?
There is no fixed limit. Very large PDFs (100+ MB) depend on your device memory; most computers and phones handle typical documents without trouble.
